The Dangers of Asbestos Exposure

The Dangers of Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos is a compound made up of six minerals that are often used in commercial and industrial products. When disturbed, fibers of asbestos can become airborne and be inhaled by people, leading to serious health problems. Uses of asbestos were outlawed for the most part in the late 1980’s, but it still exists in many older homes and buildings today. Asbestos exposure is especially likely when renovating or demolishing an older building, so you should always test for asbestos before beginning any construction or remodeling. DCM Environmental is here to provide Massachusetts with asbestos testing to ensure the safety of you, your employees, and your family. Contact us today to speak to an asbestos testing expert!

Symptoms of Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos exposure can cause scarring and inflammation of the lungs, leading to breathing problems. After prolonged exposure to asbestos, there are some tell-tale signs of asbestosis, or asbestos poisoning. Some of these symptoms include shortness of breath, persistent cough, fatigue or constant tiredness, wheezing, pain in the chest, and sudden weight loss. Asbestos exposure can also lead to several types of cancer, including mesothelioma, lung cancer, laryngeal cancer, ovarian cancer, and more. Occupational exposure is the number one cause of asbestosis, usually occurring at construction sites and in factories. If you believe that you may be showing signs of asbestosis, contact your doctor or healthcare provider immediately.

Where Asbestos May Be Found

Asbestos was not used in new construction after the late 1980’s, but is still commonly found in homes and buildings built before then. If you live in an older home or building, asbestos may be found in many places. These include attics, wall insulation, vinyl flooring, roofing, siding, areas surrounding wood burning stoves, water pipes, furnaces, and more. If you suspect that your home may contain asbestos, contact DCM Environmental for an asbestos inspection.
